Every where at the bank of any water body in Ghana , be it river, lake or sea and you are bound to have free advise. Many have asked what I mean by free advise, well, let’s put it this way, you can pick a lot of wisdom from the people in the area based on their experiences in life, by just reading the inscriptions on the canoes.
This is what I mean; a canoe with an inscription Yesu Wo Ma Fa which translates to mean God is on my side recognizes that one isn’t alone and at every point in time, there is divine presence which makes all things possible and offers protection.
Another with the number in ration 50:50 was an inscription made on the canoe of a local fisherman in Dixcove in the Western region of Ghana which interpreted to mean, life is a risk and they that venture, get the best of it. Again, it’s full of 50:50 chances.
Walking on the Kokrobitey beach in Accra and I was drawn by the words of a canoe that read, One Day, intrigued by it, I got closer and inquired if the owner was around, eventually when we met I understood the reason of the word as, it took one day for every thing to happen, a day to birth, a day to celebrate, a day to die, attract world etc
Even more hilarious was when I was at the Amanzuri lake, a blue canoe that docked was described by the owner as Black man because he built it and he was black.
More striking for me was at the Axim beach, I stayed with the word Ahumbrase (humility) for a very long time. The owner of the canoe reminds his humble beginnings. Today, he has a fleet of canoes and employs several people but always reminded of where he started.
If you need free advise or want to learn some of the wisdom in Ghana, your best bet would be to visit the coastal area.
